SOUL SISTERI love this couple! We conversed in broken English, discussing everything from American oak trees to relationships, with a sprinkle of wine banter. Giulia is at the helm of a small estate previously run by her grandparents, and she fully immersed herself at the age of twenty-four, now co-running it with her partner, Davide. They own 4.7 hectares of vines, always farmed organically.

During our weekend off, I visited their estate to taste the wines. I witnessed firsthand the tremendous effort they invest in the vineyards, which look distinctly different from most I had worked in, boasting a lush cover crop and employing minimal copper and sulfur. They operate in the original underground cellar, hand-built by Giulia's father, a remarkable feat considering his background as a mason or architect. They predominantly use old large wooden casks and are implementing extended aging, just starting to release wines after years of cellaring.

Davide met Giulia over five years ago while making a documentary film about natural winemaking in Italy. She is incredibly charismatic; frankly, I wanted to stay in Piedmonte with them both. They share similar winemaking philosophies, focusing on farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. However, a natural tension arises when discussing ideas, as Giulia carries the estate's name and history.

The wines are dense, serious, and a bit brooding, yet with a salinity I didn't taste often during my trip. Asti, situated on an ancient seabed, features land with white and blue clays mixed with sand and tuff. This bottling comprises of 100% Bonarda Piemontese, a rare grape seldom planted and rarely used 100% in bottlings. This grape should not be confused with the wine Bonarda, mainly composed of Croatina and is unrelated to the Argentinian grape. Both I Versanti and Gonella work with this grape, known for being more aromatic and lower in alcohol than the widely planted Barbera. J'adore!

This wine is truly a hidden gem. The Bonanova 2018 has an exquisite taste that rivals much more expensive bottles. Highly recommend for any wine enthusiast!

CasualSip,

Tried the Bonanova 2018 at a dinner party. It was decent, but I felt like it didn’t quite match my personal preference for bolder reds.

The Bonarda Piemontese 'Bonanova' has a delightful berry undertone, making it a pleasant companion to grilled meats. Will definitely buy again!

RedWineFan123,

Initially, I bought it to try something new, but I was pleasantly surprised by its depth compared to another Bonarda I tried from a different winery, which was quite disappointing.

HomeBrewExpert,

Honestly, I didn’t enjoy the Bonanova 2018 as much as I expected. I found it too fruity and lacking the complexity I usually look for. Might not purchase again.

TastingNotesPro,

I love the Bonarda grape, and Bonanova 2018 captures the essence beautifully. A well-rounded bottle that paired excellently with pasta.

FrugalWineBuyer,

At $18, this wine is a steal! I’ve had pricier wines that didn’t taste as good as the Bonanova. Definitely a great buy.
