Mac-Talla Red Wine Barriques Tasting Notes
Official tasting notes
Colour: Crimson.
Nose: Summer berries with a herbal note and a hint of dry smoke
Palate: Juicy red fruits with cacao and a big waft of smoke.
Ed's review
Colour: Natural colour; dark amber, bronze. Oily in the glass, with lots of parallel legs.
Nose: Islay peat and smoked pork with lingonberry sauce. A wonderful dance between the savoury notes, and the sweeter fruit notes. More red berry notes, cranberries and redcurrants. A faint coastal note, like pebbles from the shore, warmed around the fire.
Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Unmistakable Islay peat. Plenty of fruit - red berries, raisins and plums. A slightly herbal character. I'm reminded of smoked Swedish meatballs with herbs and lingonberry sauce. Oak and wood spice. Alcohol is well-integrated adding body with just a little warmth.
Finish: Medium to long finish. Fruit and nut chocolate. A waft of smoke. Nicely warming with a touch of spice.
Overall: A delicious whisky, very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend.
About MacTalla Red Wine Barriques
Islay is synonymous with peat and smoke. But, through maturation in exceptional wood you can develop different styles and interpretations of that classic Islay smoke. Mac-Talla have aged their single malt in Red Wine Barriques for the full maturation term. This has resulted in an elegant, yet powerful dram with great balance of fruit and smoke.
